A hard toe, also called the lux ridigus, is a condition of toe hardening due to arthritis, which leads to joint degeneration and hardening.
The signs of the condition in question, are pain and stiffness in the joint at the base of the toe during walking, standing or bending, difficulty in performing certain activities such as running and kneeling as well as swelling and redness in the joint area.
Although the condition is degenerative, it can occur in young people, especially in athletically active people who have suffered an joint injury.

Surgical treatment - by sanding the margins of the joint (in the early stages of the condition) or fixation surgery of the bones to each other (in later stages of the condition).
